A hot tub is a luxurious addition to any home, providing relaxation and therapeutic benefits. However, keeping the water clean and clear requires regular maintenance. Without proper care, a hot tub can develop cloudy water, unpleasant odors, and even harmful bacteria buildup. Fortunately, with a few simple steps, you can ensure your hot tub remains in pristine condition throughout the year. This guide outlines essential maintenance practices to keep your water crystal clear and inviting.

Test and balance water chemistry regularly

Maintaining the right water chemistry is crucial for clear and safe hot tub water. Regularly test the water using test strips or a digital tester to check pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels. The pH level should stay between 7.2 and 7.8, while total alkalinity should be between 80 and 120 parts per million (ppm). If the water chemistry is unbalanced, adjust it accordingly using pH increasers, decreasers, or alkalinity boosters. Keeping these levels in check prevents scaling, cloudiness, and skin irritation.

    Clean and replace filters frequently

Filters play a significant role in trapping dirt, debris, and oils that enter the hot tub. Over time, clogged or dirty filters reduce water circulation and lead to murky water. Rinse the filters with a hose every week and use a filter cleaner once a month to remove deep-seated grime. Depending on usage, replace filters every 12 to 24 months to maintain optimal water clarity and flow.

    Shock the hot tub weekly

Shocking the hot tub helps eliminate contaminants, bacteria, and organic matter that regular sanitizers might miss. Use a non-chlorine or chlorine shock treatment once a week, or more frequently if the hot tub is used often. Shocking boosts sanitizer efficiency and keeps the water fresh and clear. Follow manufacturer recommendations for the correct dosage to prevent overuse, which can lead to irritation or chemical imbalances.

Drain and refill every three to four months

No matter how well the water is maintained, it eventually accumulates minerals, oils, and other residues. Draining and refilling the hot tub every three to four months ensures fresh, clean water. Before refilling, thoroughly clean the interior shell with a hot tub surface cleaner to remove any lingering buildup. Refill the hot tub with filtered water and balance the chemistry to start with a clean slate.

Keep the cover clean and in good condition

A hot tub cover helps maintain water temperature and prevents debris from entering, but it also requires maintenance. Wipe down the cover with a mild cleaner weekly to avoid mold and mildew growth. Refrain from using strong chemicals that may harm the material. Ensure the cover is properly sealed when not in use to reduce evaporation and keep contaminants out.

Consider an outdoor sauna for enhanced relaxation

Maintaining a hot tub is easier when paired with an outdoor sauna. An outdoor sauna promotes sweating, which helps detoxify the body before entering the hot tub, reducing the amount of body oils and contaminants introduced into the water. This practice enhances the overall spa experience while contributing to cleaner hot tub water.

Keeping a hot tub clean and well-maintained ensures a safe and enjoyable soaking experience year-round. Regular water testing, filter maintenance, weekly shocking, and periodic draining are essential for crystal-clear water. Proper cover care, water circulation, and the use of clarifiers further enhance water quality. By following these simple maintenance steps, hot tubs will remain a refreshing oasis of relaxation, free from unwanted buildup or contamination throughout the year.
